PSD to PNG help and support
Answers to the most common problems when you open or convert Photoshop files with PSD to PNG. If your problem is not here, email support.
First things to try
- Click the extension icon to open the converter page, then drop the file there.
- Check that the file name ends in .psd or .psb and that the file is under 500 MB.
- Choose PNG, JPG or PDF before you add the files; the choice applies to files added after it.
- Read the warning under the preview: it lists what may differ from Photoshop.
- For a large file, close other tabs and drop it again on its own.
Common problems and fixes
PSD file won’t open
The error under the file name says why. “This is not a Photoshop file” means the file is not a .psd or .psb inside, even if its name says so, and “damaged or incomplete” usually means the download did not finish. Download the file again, or re-save it from Photoshop.
The PNG looks different from Photoshop
The file probably has no saved full image, so the extension combined the layers itself. It then does not draw layer styles, adjustment layers, vector masks or rare blend modes, and lists the affected layers in a warning. Re-save the file in Photoshop with “Maximize Compatibility” on and convert it again for an exact result.
Colors look wrong in a CMYK PSD
CMYK and Lab files are converted to RGB without a color profile, so colors are approximate. Convert the document to RGB in Photoshop first if you need exact colors.
Some of my files were skipped
The page converts up to 20 files at a time, each up to 500 MB, and only .psd and .psb files. A notice above the list names the files it skipped and why; add the rest in a second batch.
“Not enough memory to convert this file”
Very large documents can use more memory than the browser allows for one tab. Close other tabs and other memory-heavy apps, then drop the file on the converter page again.
The image is too large to save as JPG or PDF
JPG and PDF need a browser canvas, which allows at most 32,767 px per side and about 268 million pixels in total. Choose PNG for that file; PNG does not have this limit.
Transparent areas turned white
JPG and PDF have no transparency, so transparent areas become white. Choose PNG to keep transparency.
Convert PSD to PNG is missing from the right-click menu
The menu item appears only when you right-click a link whose address ends in .psd or .psb, or names such a file in its query. For other links, download the file and drop it on the converter page.
Right-click conversion fails with “Access to this website was not granted” or “leads to a web page”
The extension needs your permission for that one site to download the file. Press Allow access and convert and accept Chrome’s prompt. If the link opens a web page instead of the file, open that page and right-click its real download link.
Your data
PSD to PNG does not store your files. They are read into memory on the converter page and are gone when you close that tab, so download the results before you close it. The only thing it saves is your last choice of PNG, JPG or PDF, in the converter page’s local storage. Sites you allowed for right-click downloads can be removed in the extension’s details page in Chrome. Removing the extension deletes all of its data.
