First things to try

  1. Use Google Chrome and an internet connection for Voice follow.
  2. Check the Language you speak in Settings if voice follow loses your place.
  3. Close other apps that use the camera, or turn off the camera in your call, before you press Record.
  4. Press Back up under your script list now and then to keep a copy of every script.

Common problems and fixes

Voice follow doesn't start or stops

Voice follow uses Chrome's speech recognition, which turns your speech into text on Google's servers, so it needs Google Chrome and an internet connection. Some Chromium-based browsers turn this service off; there, scroll at a set speed instead. If Chrome says speech recognition was not allowed, allow the microphone for Teleprompter App and turn voice follow on again.

Voice follow loses my place

Make sure the Language you speak in Settings matches the language of your script, and that the right Microphone is chosen. Notes in [square brackets] are skipped. If it falls behind, press the Left or Right arrow to move a line.

Camera or microphone access is blocked

Chrome is set to block it for the extension. Press Open permission settings in the message, set Camera and Microphone to Allow, then come back to the tab and try again. If your system blocks the browser, allow Chrome under Privacy & Security › Camera and Microphone in Windows or macOS settings, or under Privacy controls on ChromeOS.

The camera could not start

Another app, often your video call, may be using it. Close that app or turn off its camera, then try again. If no camera is found, check that it is connected and turned on.

The floating window doesn't open

Press Pop out again. The floating window needs Chrome 116 or newer and opens from the teleprompter tab. Press Back to the tab in the window to return to the tab.

Global shortcuts don't work from my call

Open Shortcuts under the script list. If a shortcut shows Not set, another extension or app already uses those keys: press Change shortcuts and pick new ones. They default to Ctrl+Shift+8 (play or pause), Ctrl+Shift+7 (slower) and Ctrl+Shift+9 (faster), with Command instead of Ctrl on a Mac, and they work while the teleprompter tab is open.

Where is my recording?

Takes are not saved by themselves. Press Download in the review to save the take to your Downloads folder as MP4, or WebM where Chrome can't record MP4. Until you record again or close the tab, Last take opens the review once more. A discarded take can't be recovered.

My clicker or foot pedal does nothing

Clickers and page-turner pedals send Page Up, Page Down or B, which the prompter understands while its tab or floating window has the focus. Click the prompter once before you start.

Can I open a Word or PDF file?

Import reads text files and Teleprompter App backup files. For a Word document, a PDF or a Google Doc, copy the text and paste it into a script; bold and highlights are kept.

Your data

Your scripts and settings are saved in Chrome's local extension storage on this computer. They are not synced and are never sent to us. Recordings stay in the tab's memory until you download or discard them, and are never uploaded. While voice follow listens, your speech is sent to Google's speech recognition to be turned into text. Delete a script with its delete button (you can undo right after), and press Back up to save every script to one file, which Import reads back. Removing the extension deletes all scripts, so make a backup first.

When you write to us

  • Whether you were reading in the tab, in the floating window or in full screen.
  • For voice follow: the language set in Settings and the exact message you saw.
  • For the camera or microphone: the message and the app you use for calls, if one was open.
  • The extension name and its version from chrome://extensions.
  • Your Chrome version from chrome://settings/help and your operating system.
  • What you did, what you expected and what happened instead.
  • A screenshot, if the problem is visible on the screen.
